Gotland Pelt

As the name implies they originate from Gotland. The first Gotland Pelt came to Denmark in the late 1960s.

The Gotland Pelt is a simple and elegant sheep. It is a watchful, robust and active sheep with good flocking – and maternal instincts. Features that makes them perform well on marginal land and heath land.

When the lambs are about. 4 months old, we sort them based on their fur. This means that we make an assessment of the color, curl, and density, among other things. From this evaluation, we choose our breeding stock, and then we look at the lamb’s size and general appearance.

Background

The sheep are the foundation of my farm shop and workshop.
I’ve worked with sheep since 1970 and with Gotlandic sheep since 1984.

In 1993 I graduated from the College of Textile Design and Graphics in Højer, Denmark.

I keep Gotland Pelt because they are something special. Both wool, hides and meat are of a very high quality. In addition, the animals have a wonderful temper. They are a relatively small breed and we work well together.

Our farm, an old farmhouse from 1741, lies in Sønderho. It has 50 acres of land with it and here we keep our approx. 100 dams outside all the year round.
They do have the opportunity to go inside of a shelter if they want.

Wool and yarn

Our wool is lustrous and finely wrinkled. Can be used for hand spinning and is also very suitable for felting.

When we cut the sheep and the lambs, I quality – and shade sort the wool in light -, medium – and dark gray.

På vaskeri og spinderi bliver ulden nænsomt behandlet så den bevarer sin silkeagtige glans og blødhed.
At a laundry and spinning mill the wool is gently treated to ensure that it retains its silky sheen and softness.

Yarn made from our sheep is very suitable for both knitting as weaving.

I weave blankets, shawls, scarves and clothing fabrics.

I also have a variety of machine-woven blankets and shawls, of course also made from Gotland sheep.

If you are short on time for knitting, I also have pre-fabricated sweaters in my shop.
